How to Remove Background from a GIF
To remove the background from a GIF you need per-frame processing: every animation frame has to be keyed, then the file re-encoded with identical timing. Solid-Color vs Complex Backgrounds: Which Method to Use
Most GIFs made for the web sit on a flat color — white sticker exports, green-screen captures, flat-color product renders. For these, the Auto method is instant and pixel-exact. For photographs, busy scenes, or gradients, color keying leaves artifacts, so the AI methods learn the subject shape instead.

Remove White or Green Screen Background from a GIF
White backgrounds are the most common case: sticker GIFs, screen recordings, and product spins. The Auto method detects the white automatically — and because the default mode is Connected, white inside the subject (eyes, highlights, speech bubbles) is preserved. Only if you can see the background through holes in the subject should you switch to All matching pixels.
Green screen works the same way — usually pure green (#00FF00 or similar) keys out at the default tolerance of 20. Tips for Clean Edges
- Tolerance: start at 20 and raise it only until the background disappears — too high eats into the subject.
- Shrink edge (0–3 px): erodes the mask inward, removing the thin leftover rim that anti-aliased edges leave behind.
- Smooth edge (0–3 px): feathers the boundary so the GIF does not look cut out with scissors.
- Matte: pick the color of the surface the GIF will live on. Remaining semi-transparent edge pixels are blended toward it, killing halos.
- Preview on black and white: a halo invisible on white shows instantly on black — toggle the preview backdrop before exporting.
FAQ
Does removing the background reduce GIF quality?
The subject pixels are untouched. GIF output is re-palettized to 255 colors plus one transparent slot, which for most GIFs is lossless or visually identical. If you need the absolute original colors, export APNG or PNG frames — both keep full 8-bit alpha and millions of colors.
Why is there still a faint outline around my subject?
That rim is anti-aliasing from when the GIF was created — pixels that blend subject and background color. Increase tolerance slightly, add 1 px of Shrink edge, and set Matte to the color where the GIF will be displayed.
Can I remove a background that is a different color in each corner?
Yes — add up to three key colors with the + button, or click each region with the eyedropper. For true gradients use the AI method instead.
What happens to the animation speed?
Nothing — each frame keeps its exact delay in milliseconds, and the loop count is preserved. A 24-frame, 80 ms-per-frame GIF stays a 24-frame, 80 ms-per-frame GIF.
Is there a watermark on the download?
